Who I am

I am among other things a developmental psychologist and currently a marketing researcher and consultant for the pharmaceutical industry. No, one has nothing to do with the other. Except that both involve research, after a fashion.

I used to spend my time watching babies for a living. I studied speech perception and language acquisition, and my dissertation looked at the ways that rules of speech and music may map onto each other, at least as far as developing infants are concerned. I keep track of this stuff as closely as I can, but it is not easy to do anymore.

My current job has been described as "doing research that people can use immediately" and "helping an industry that helps people live better lives." I believe both of these things are at least partially true some of the time.

Why I blog

I decided to put this little site together mostly because I spend too much time surfing and sending links to various people with "hey check this out" and I thought this would simplify the process and reduce the annoyance factor. Plus, I see this as the closest thing to a radio show that someone with my voice will ever achieve, and it's damned fun to do. The blogger community is fascinating. Special thanks to the folks at Blogger.com and Webmonkey.com for making this so easy and for providing such incredible resources for newbies like me.

The title is serendipity in action: I happened upon the clothmother graphic on this site and it reminded me of my teaching days, and how students seemed to respond to the Harlowe studies. Plus, I think there's a little of that infant monkey in all of us; torn between several insufficient choices, we somehow develop the resiliency to muddle through.
